Going to give a lengthy thorough review in hopes that it helps someone because its a daunting task sometimes making the right decision for a good shoe fit.
In terms of the best fit advice I can give is not to put yourself through the mental gymnastics of comparing the shoe size you wear from other brands as every brand has different sizing standards - The one constant present at any given time that you always have is your foot length, width and all the other nuances your unique foot shape has. And also your different experiences wearing different types of shoes and what you need to feel comfortable in different shoes for your lifestyle and end use of the shoe. So, with that said, follow the size guide and MEASURE YOUR FOOT LENGTH ACCURATELY & HONESTLY, factor in all the latter points made, and also consider how frequently you plan on wearing the shoes with socks, if at all. Remember, WCS is the maker of these shoes, they are not buying shoes from a wholesaler and providing generic size guides so they have their own size standards for different styles they offer. So, of course, reach out to the team for advice on fit if need be as they are very responsive and helpful.
I’ll use myself as an example to elaborate in depth on the above outlined: In my case, my bare foot length measures 25.4 cm (measure both feet because a lot of people tend to have one foot a little bigger than the other), I have a medium width foot (Ive read reviews where people found the shoe opening too tight or loose, I had no problems with the shoe width). I have average shaped toes that are quite straight with no curvature (“no curvature”, in contrast to someone with, for example, what they call, “hammertoes”, “mallet toes”, or “claw toes”). My toe length is average and aren’t too short or long and they gradate from the biggest to the smallest in uniformity (in contrast to what I mean by, “uniformity”, some people have a longer second toe than their biggest toe which they call, “Morton’s toe” or “Greek foot”). I also do not have any bunions I need to consider either, or any foot injuries or previous foot surgeries. Of note, I also have a narrower heel that tends to slip out of the backs of shoes even if my feet are crammed in the toe box. Also, my feet are on the flatter side so, I do not have high arches.
With that stated, I ordered a size 40 and they are a perfect, “sock”, like fit, meaning, in my case my big toe is right at the toe box with a tiny extra space in the back I always have to deal with due to my narrower heel. Upon first putting them on, my big toes were not happy since for closed style shoes, I tend to size up and wear boot styles a lot more for dressier to formal looks because I like my feet to be well away from the toe box and prefer thick cushy socks so, I knew this style would be something new for me and I’d have to approach wearing these differently and adjust to a different feel for a perfect fit that would not slip off of my feet.
Luckily the sheepskin is soft, pliable and has, good “memory”, so didn’t take much time to break in and conform to the shape of my big toes. Personally, for me, it took a couple days of wearing them around the house for around 30 mins to an hour for them to be perfectly comfortable. My big toe is still right at the toe box, just like a sock since the leather material just stretches enough to allow the perfect amount of give for the toes so, its just molded to my toe shape so its comfortable now; I can wear them all day and night with no discomfort.
Unfortunately, I don’t think I’ll be able to comfortably wear a size 40 with socks. Maybe it would be different if I was wearing these a couple times a week for many hours, perhaps they would stretch out more (which I read in some review’s that this was the case) but this style of shoe for me is just for easy soft life days and nights, where Im headed to a specific destination, so I don’t ever plan on going for long extended walks without interruption in these (although I could comfortably do the latter if needed).
So, I guess also considering the frequency of wear would also be an important factor because again, sheepskin is a softer leather and Im sure with constant and continued wear and walking, they’d probably stretch more and could become even bigger in the long run if the correct perfect size isn’t chosen initially. Hope the above helps to stimulate productive thought when choosing your size because this is the, “nature”, of open vamp style shoes like pumps and ballet flats etc that don’t have straps so one must consider as many points to determine what the perfect balance is for them!
